Designed by the French tennis champion René Lacoste as an alternative to his traditional tennis shirt, making it more practical to wear when playing. Quickly adopted by other sports, it left its exclusive sporting context in the sixties to hit the streets as sophisticated menswear. Usually made from knitted cotton, more specifically piqué, which refers to cotton yarn characterised by raised parallel cords or geometric designs in the fabric.
